Wouter van Rijs

Research technician

My background

After my laboratory study Hoger Laboratorium Onderwijs (direction Biomedical) at the Hogeschool Rotterdam, I worked as a technician for 2 years at TNO PG in Leiden.

In 2001 I started working as a research technician at the departments of Neurology and Immunology at the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam.

The focus of our research group has always been neuro-inflammatory diseases with the Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) as main interest.

My projects

Over the years I have worked on many projects, from molecular studies on the role of genetic variations in GBS to cell culture systems investigating the immune response to bacterial antigens and elaborate immunophenotyping of white blood cells with flow cytometry.

My personal highlight is the successful cloning of the first human IgG anti-GM1 antibody from a patient with GBS.

Another important part of my job is the management of the biobank from the International GBS Outcome study (IGOS).
